The entertainer, known for his no-holds-barred lyrics about women and marijuana, recently introduced his reggae-inspired moniker, Snoop Lion, well timed for his upcoming reggae album, Reincarnated.
In support of the project, he recently released the LP's first single, La La La, last Friday.
The song, which was produced by Major Lazer, sees Snoop trying a Jamaican accent and features vocals from Jovi Rockwell.
Snoop Lion's social networking pages are up and running. Pages on Twitter (@snoop_lion), SoundCloud, Facebook and Tumblr are very active with thousands of fans commenting on his new persona. Most have responded favourably. He even earned a 'big up' from Rohan Marley which read, "BIG UP @SnoopDogg @snoop_lion #LaLaLa track #JAHRASTAFARI". A simple video that supposedly is the song playing on vinyl is also making the rounds.
In a March 28 published interview on mtv.com, DJ/producer Diplo of Major Lazer revealed he had been working on a reggae album with Snoop Dogg. "Snoop Dogg is an icon, man; he's bigger than the music. "What we're doing is a reggae record. It's like Snoop Dogg and Major Lazer together. It's all reggae and he's singing and he's doing a (expletive omitted) awesome job and I never knew it, but he had his heart in every song. We're going to get back into the production of it next month, and I'm really proud of that record. It's the first record I've ever executive-produced and his crew is amazing."
They're also working on No Doubt's (a group known for their ska/rocksteady flavour) album Push and Shove.
Snoop Lion is scheduled to make his first live performance at the Caribana 2012 festival on August 3 in Toronto.
