Massive crowd for JA's Gala celebration

Jamaica's National Stadium was awash yesterday with the dominant colour of yellow as Jamaicans came decked out to celebrate their nation's 50th anniversary at the Independence Grand Gala last night. Lots of visiting dignitaries as well including representatives from Trinidad & Tobago, Antigua & Barbuda, CARICOM, Colin Powell for the USA and the President of South Africa Jacob Zuma.

Several announcements were made asking the thousands who could not get into the stadium to head across to the Arena to watch the activities via a giant jumbo-tron. For the last few weeks the demand for the gala tickets were excessive causing a run on the outlets with long lines that formed hours way ahead of scheduled opening.

Performances lasted over 4 hours inclusive of 6000 dancers, singers, musicians, school, church & community groups, established and up-coming artistes all added to the stellar show. There was also a special performance by the female soldiers of the Jamaica Defence Force, all decked out in white berets, white calf length boots and blue & white mini skirts, doing drill rutines to songs such as RDX "Jump" and Konshens "Do Sumpn", which thrilled the capacity crowd.

The event was broadcasts live on national television.Galacrowd
